A Locust Grove High School student was killed Tuesday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving slid off an icy Henry County road and struck a tree, police said.

Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith said the Ford Ranger pickup occupied by four males and a female wrecked on Coan Road just east of Willow Creek Drive in McDonough about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver, 17-year-old Nash Beever of McDonough, died at the scene, Smith said.

He said the female passenger was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Two other passengers were taken to Piedmont Henry Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the fourth passenger was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center, also with non-life threatening injuries.

The identities of those injured were not released, but Smith said they were all Henry County teenagers.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that weather conditions were a factor and lack of proper safety restraints will also be a factor,” Smith said.

Henry County schools remain closed through Thursday because of the dangerous road conditions, authorities said.

The district is working to get crisis management teams and counselors to Locust Grove High School when it reopens, a schools spokesman said.
