Authorities have charged a teenager in the fatal shooting of a 73-year-old man last month outside a Goodwill donation center on Collier Road.

A Jonesboro teenager faces a murder charge after investigators linked him to the fatal shooting of a 73-year-old man last month outside a Goodwill donation center, Atlanta police said.

Lawrence Denney was killed Oct. 20 during a carjacking in the store’s parking lot on Collier Road, police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee said in an emailed statement.

On Wednesday, investigators obtained arrest warrants charging 17-year-old Antonio Sanders with murder and hijacking a motor vehicle. The teen was already in custody at the Fulton County Jail on nearly 30 charges, including armed robbery, participating in criminal street gang activity, theft by taking and 17 counts of entering an automobile, among others.

The alleged crime spree dates to June and took place in multiple jurisdictions, jail records show. Sanders has been in jail since Oct. 22 following his arrest by College Park police.

Atlanta police are still searching for a second suspect in the 73-year-old’s death. That person’s name has not been released.

Denney’s body was discovered outside the Goodwill with a gunshot wound to the chest about 3:30 a.m., AJC.com previously reported. Following the shooting, two to three vehicles were seen leaving the parking lot, authorities said at the time.

“The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Denney was shot during a carjacking where his vehicle was taken,” Chafee said Thursday, adding that investigators later obtained evidence linking Sanders to the crime.

Sanders remains held without bond at the Fulton County Jail.
