Sergio Alvarado is wanted on malice murder charges after police said he fatally stabbed a man.

A 22-year-old accused of stabbing a man to death outside of a Roswell restaurant over the weekend is thought to have fled to Texas, officials said.

Sergio Alvarado, who is wanted on malice murder charges, is believed to be in the Houston area, Roswell police spokesman Officer Tim Lupo confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday. Roswell police are working closely with Houston police, the Texas Rangers, the U.S. Marshals Service and border patrol “as we continue to work to bring him into custody,” Lupo said.

Authorities said Alvarado stabbed 40-year-old Rigoberto Corea while trying to rob him Saturday. Investigators were sent to the La Parranda Mexican Bar and Grill just after midnight after a 911 caller reported “a group of people fighting” in the parking lot, Lupo said.

No one was at the scene when police arrived, but officers were notified that a man had arrived at a hospital with a stab wound. Officers determined the victim, later identified as Corea, had been injured in the fight, Lupo said.

Medical professionals tried to save Corea’s life, but he died of his injuries.

“Corea and Alvarado were known to each other, and the incident appears to stem from an attempted personal robbery,” Lupo said. It is not clear what, if anything, was stolen during the incident.

In addition to malice murder, authorities obtained warrants accusing Alvarado of aggravated assault, possession of a knife during certain crimes and robbery.

Alvarado’s whereabouts are unknown. He’s described as 5-foot-9 and about 160 pounds, according to police. Alvarado has brown eyes and long, black hair that may be pulled back into a ponytail.

Roswell police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 770-640-4100 to speak with a detective.
