Get those umbrellas ready. Downpours are expected across North Georgia on Sunday morning.

With an 80% chance of showers, most metro residents will probably start the second half of their weekends indoors.

All those clouds should keep temperatures slightly warmer than average, however. After a chilly start, Sunday’s high is expected to reach 60 degrees in Atlanta, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

The rain should start to clear out by the afternoon, but temperatures are expected to plummet heading into the evening, according to the latest forecast. By late Sunday night, there could be light snowfall in some parts of far North Georgia.

“That’s when we’ll have some lingering moisture as the cold air comes rushing in,” Deon said. “We’re talking the higher elevations, but no accumulation is expected.”

The chilly weather will stick around through the start of the work week. Monday is expected to be partly cloudy and about 17 degrees cooler, with a high of just 43. Temperatures should start to warm up by midweek before the rain returns on Friday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has several construction projects underway that could cause delays on metro Atlanta’s interstates this weekend. In Cobb County, overnight lane closures are expected along I-75 as crews work to repair nine bridges across the county, GDOT said.

All lanes should reopen by the Monday morning commute.
