Atlanta’s streak of 90-degree days is expected to continue through at least Wednesday.
But those planning on getting outside this weekend may want to pack an umbrella just in case. Isolated showers are expected to stick around for the next several days as North Georgia continues its summer pattern of heat and rain.
There’s a 30% chance of afternoon storms on Sunday as Atlanta sees its seventh consecutive day of temperatures in the 90s, according to the latest forecast.
“Sunday will be very similar to (Saturday),” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “We’re expecting a high of around 92 degrees and it will be humid.”
Thunderstorms rolled through metro Atlanta late Saturday afternoon, though the rain wasn’t very widespread. Those isolated showers are expected to return the second half of the weekend and stick around through at least midweek.
“We’re starting off the day with some sunshine and mostly clear skies. Then by the afternoon, the showers and storms will get going,” Deon said. “While they aren’t expected to be severe, we could see a strong storm or two, meaning we could be dealing with some heavy downpours.”
Despite Sunday’s heat, Georgia Department of Transportation crews are expected to be out in full force completing road projects. The construction could cause delays for some drivers.
A detour is planned all weekend near the I-285/Ga. 400 interchange to circumvent a closure on Abernathy Road, GDOT officials said.
This weekend’s showers are expected to stick around for the start of the work week, Channel 2 reported. There’s a 40% chance of rain on Monday, but that jumps to 60% by midweek.
“Moisture will continue to build as we head into next Tuesday and Wednesday, when storms will become more widespread and more likely,” Deon said.
