Sunday’s afternoon high will top 90 degrees again as metro Atlanta’s heat streak is set to continue for the next several days.

While scattered afternoon showers are possible, the second half of the weekend won’t be a washout, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. There will be more sunshine than rain, which is good news for those planning to get outdoors on Sunday.

The afternoon high is expected to reach 91 degrees in the city, but the humidity will make it feel closer to 100, Deon said. Those spending the day outside are encouraged to drink plenty of water and take regular breaks from the summer heat, if possible, she said.

“Whatever your plans are, stay cool and hydrated if you’re going to be outdoors,” Deon said.

The chance of rain drops to 20% on Sunday, according to the latest forecast. And while an isolated shower or two is possible later in the day, there’s no widespread rain expected.

“Sunday will be a drier day, so a lot less in the way of rain activity,” Deon said. “The heat, though, is sticking around.”

Metro Atlanta’s heat streak will continue into the workweek, but so will the chance of storms. Monday’s afternoon high is expected to reach 91 degrees for a second consecutive day as the chance of rain increases to 30%, Deon said.

The chance of summer storms will stick around through at least Wednesday.

“It’s not a bad idea to have an umbrella just in case,” Deon said.

As for traffic, the Georgia Department of Transportation has several construction projects planned this weekend that could lead to backups on metro Atlanta’s interstates. Drivers should expect delays at the I-285/Ga. 400 interchange as roadwork continues there.

In addition, DeKalb County drivers should expect overnight delays in both directions of the Perimeter as crews resurface lanes between Clifton Springs Road and Moreland Avenue, GDOT said. The $6.4 million repaving project is scheduled is set to continue each weekend through late summer. All lanes should reopen by 7 a.m. Monday.

Drivers can also expect lane closures along I-75 in Cobb and Fulton Counties on Sunday as crews repair bridges between Chastain and West Paces Ferry Roads. All lanes are expected to reopen by 9 p.m.
