An elementary student in Memphis was in critical condition Thursday after being shot and wounded at school, according to reports.

Gunfire erupted shortly after 9 a.m. at Cummings Elementary School, WMC News 5 reported.

Memphis Police Department investigators described the suspect as a male juvenile but have not identified him. WREG reported the suspect was also a student who fled the scene in a vehicle but has since turned himself in.

No other children were reported injured, and the male victim remains in Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

After the shooting, the school was placed on lockdown and students were moved off campus to nearby Metropolitan Church and Lemoyne-Owen College, where parents were called to pick up their children, News 5 reported.

Police were still at the scene of the shooting around noon.

The circumstances that led to the shooting were still not clear, and no other details were immediately available.
