An 18-year-old Pickens County High School student is accused of raping a classmate inside the school, the county’s sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Deputies were called to the school Wednesday afternoon after a 15-year-old student told a teacher she had been assaulted, the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said. The alleged rape happened on campus, but after school hours, according to police.

On Thursday, police arrested Miguel Chavez Cano and charged him with statutory rape, police said. Cano was booked into the Pickens County jail, where he was being held without bond late Thursday.

Additional charges could be pending, the sheriff’s office said. The GBI assisted with the investigation.
