A Texas developer is building a $10 million Alzheimer’s care facility that will open next summer in Stockbridge, adding to the southside’s growing cadre of medical services.

Groundbreaking for the 26,000-square-foot memory care complex is slated for Wednesday. Autumn Leaves of Stockbridge will be Irving, Tex-based LaSalle Group’s third memory care facility in metro Atlanta. The facility will house nearly 50 residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other mental impairments.

“We are excited to bring our specialized memory care to Stockbridge, said Ilde Robles, regional director of development for Georgia at The LaSalle Group. “We have discovered that there is a true need for our services in Henry County. Our community will be close to several hospitals, and it is clear to us that Henry County is becoming a medical hub in Metro Atlanta.”

The LaSalle Group chose the Stockbridge area because of its growing population of aging baby boomers and its proximity to two area hospitals, Southern Regional Medical Center in Clayton and Henry Piedmont Hospital. Roughly 130,000 Georgians over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s, prompting many families to look for facilities that can either house their loved one or provide support.

“We’re seeing a return of the nuclear family caring for family members (with Alzheimer’s). Having a facility that deals with Alzheimer’s is very important,” said Bob White, executive director of the Henry County Development Authority.

The facility joins several other operations that have, in recent years, opened facilities or expanded to the southside. Illinois-based Cancer Treatment Centers of America opened a $150 million, 260,000 square foot facility in Newnan last year. The Piedmont Hospital Network recently absorbed Henry County’s main hospital.

“One of the most important segments of the economy in Henry County is health care. As our population ages, having the full gamut of care facilities is significant,” White said.

In addition to providing a home-like atmosphere for residents, the Stockbridge facility will offer free support groups and community services, including free day care once a week for families whose relative has memory impairment.

Autumn Leaves of Sugarloaf in Suwanee recently opened. A similar facility will open in Woodstock early next year.
