‘Stay put’: Twitter shares the bright, dark sides of stay-at-home orders

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Monday night that she signed a 14-day stay-at-home order due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With a dozen states already under stay-at-home or shelter-in-place orders, Americans unaccustomed to being resigned to their homes have been chronicling the day-to-day developments on social media using hashtags including #quarantinelife and #stayathome.

Some have shared their newfound love for the distraction that is TikTok; others have been able to offer creative unplugged options for entertainment such as crafting, cooking and knitting. States, including Michigan, New York, Maryland and more, have additional restrictions for only essential activities outside of the home, so the daily diaries have increased.

On Tuesday, several Twitter users shared their views on just how the stay-at-home orders and other restrictions have affected their lives.

For some, there was no frustration about boredom or suffering from cabin fever. Instead, they expressed anger about the president and some state leaders’ refusal to issue a complete shutdown in order to flatten the curve of the deadly virus. By Tuesday afternoon, more than 600 people had died from the virus and nearly 50,000 had tested positive.

Some were candid about facing their new realities and observing how the mandates had affected their daily lives for the good.

A few acknowledged the boredom that comes with rarely leaving your home.
