The Georgia Legislature will not resume its business until Friday, as Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, heeded the call for state workers to stay off metro Atlanta’s ice-bound roads.

“Law enforcement and first responders are appropriately focused on returning children to parents, providing relief to stranded motorists and clearing major roadways,” Cagle and Ralston said in a joint statement Wednesday afternoon. “Additional vehicles on the roads will only complicate these efforts.”

The decision to suspend lawmakers’ work followed a decision by Gov. Nathan Deal to keep state government offices closed Wednesday and Thursday to allow emergency workers to do their jobs as the region struggled to get a grip after Tuesday’s snowstorm. Like Deal, Cagle and Ralston thanked the “generous actions” of those who helped people stranded by the storm.

All legislative committee meetings have also been canceled until Friday, when the General Assembly calendars will be updated with rescheduled meeting dates.

While no legislative business took place Wednesday, it still counted as the 12th of the Legislature’s 40-day session this year.
