State Board of Education member Mary Sue Murray will host a hearing Tuesday to review the national set of academic standards known as Common Core.

The hearing, the first of several to be held by board members in congressional districts throughout the state, will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Alexander High School in Douglasville.

Common Core is opposed by some tea party activists and other conservatives as a federal intrusion into state control of public education. Supporters, including officials in higher education, business and the military, argue that the standards improve education by increasing the rigor of academic material and harmonizing when students across the country are first introduced to that material.

Georgia is among the more than 40 states in the country that have agreed to adhere to Common Core standards, but, with criticism of them mounting, Gov. Nathan Deal ordered the state Board of Education to review them.

Murray’s hearing kicks off the public portion of that review.
