A Muscogee County school bus crash, in which the vehicle left the road and crashed head-on into a tree, killed the 67-year-old driver and injured seven children Monday morning.

Roy Newman of Columbus died in the crash and all seven Mathews Elementary School students on board suffered injuries, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported.

Four of the students’ injuries were serious, and all seven were being treated at a nearby hospital, the paper reported.

Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores told the paper that Columbus Fire and EMS officials had to extricate the driver and two children from the bus.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told the paper that Newman died of blunt force trauma to the head, torso and extremities.

The crash is still under investigation.
