Josh Kistler was a doting husband and father who enjoyed coaching his son in baseball. And 6-year-old Jaxon Kistler was a happy boy known for his silly personality.

On Tuesday, a fun outing to a North Georgia swimming hole ended tragically for the father and son. Josh Kistler and his son both drowned in the waters of Dicks Creek Falls, according to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.

“When the father and son went off the rocks and into the water, they had trouble staying above the water,” Lt. Chris Pfrogner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jaxon would have celebrated his 7th birthday Saturday. Instead, his family and friends will gather the following day for a joint funeral for the boy and his father. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Dahlonega Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Sunday from 10 a.m. until service time.

A family friend created a Go Fund Me page to assist the family, including Gretchen Kistler, who lost her husband and only child.

“No monetary amount can make up for the loss of two young spirits, but it can bless the family and assist Gretchen on the road to healing,” the fundraising page states.

A Dahlonega Sheriff says the man's son was having trouble swimming when he jumped in and tried to save him.
