Griffin police Lt. Mike Richardson said a girl related to 51-year-old Stephen Chapman reported the alleged incidents to police on Aug. 13, and after an investigation, Chapman was arrested Friday afternoon.

Richardson said the acts allegedly occurred in Griffin “on more than one occasion.”

A spokeswoman for Griffin-Spalding County Schools told Channel 2 Action News that none of the alleged incidents took place in the schools.

Chapman taught math in the system for two years before his arrest, the school system spokeswoman said. The system had no idea he was under investigation until officers showed up at Chapman’s school.

Chapman is being held in the Spalding County Jail on charges of aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated sodomy and rape.

Richardson said investigators are trying to determine whether there could be any other victims, and he asked that anyone with information call Sgt. Karen Yancey at 770-229-6450.
