Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only U.S. president to be elected four times, died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945, in his Warm Springs home. He was 63.

Ma Rainey, known as the "Mother of the Blues,” died on December 22, 1939, in Rome. Rainey was 53.

Margaret Mitchell, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Gone With the Wind,” was struck and killed by an off-duty cab on August 11, 1949, at the intersection of Peachtree and 13th streets in Atlanta. She was 48.

Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly of the hip hop duo Kris Kross died May 1, 2015, after being found unresponsive in his Atlanta area home and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 34.

Chic-fil-A founder Samuel Truett Cathy died September 4, 2014, in his Atlanta home surrounded by family. He was 93.

Soul singer-songwiter Curtis Mayfield was left paralyzed from the neck down in 1990 after scaffolding fell on him during a concert. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s health declined in the years following the accident, and he died on December 26, 1999, in Roswell. He was 57.

Golf legend Bobby Jones died December 18, 1971, in Atlanta after suffering from a rare spinal disease called syringomyelia. He was 69.

Butterfly McQueen, known for the role of Prissy in “Gone With the Wind,” died when her Augusta home caught fire on December 22, 1995. She was 84.

William Hartsfield was the longest-serving mayor in Atlanta’s history (six terms). Hartsfield died February 22, 1971 in Atlanta. He was 80.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown died July, 26 2015 in an Atlanta area hospice facility. Brown was found unresponsive at her Roswell home months earlier. She was 22.

Henry Grady, who was the managing editor for the Atlanta Constitution in the 1880s and “Architect of the New South,” died in Atlanta, on December 23, 1889 of pneumonia. He was 39.

“Godfather of Soul” James Brown died of pneumonia on December 25, 2006, at Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. He was 73 years old.

Baseball hall of famer Ty Cobb died on July 17, 1961, of prostate cancer in Atlanta. He was 74.

Dr. John Stith Pemberton, inventor of Coca-Cola, died in his Atlanta home on August 16, 1888. He was 57. On the day of Pemberton’s funeral, not a single drop of Coca-Cola was served in Atlanta.

Micki Harris (right), member of the 1960s singing group, the Shirelles, died of a massive heart attack during a performance with the Shirelles in Atlanta on June 10 1982. She was 42.

Flannery O’Connor, one of America’s greatest writers and charter member of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, died in August 3, 1964, in Milledgeville of lupus. She was 39.

Ralph D. Abernathy, civil right activist and co-founder the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, suffered a heart attack and died on April 17, 1990, in Atlanta. He was 64.

Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, died from breast cancer on January 17, 1927, in her Savannah home. She was 66.

Whitman Mayo, known for his role as Grady on “Sanford and Son,” suffered a heart attack and died in Atlanta. He was 70.

Alexander Hamilton Stephens, best known for serving as the vice president of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, died March 4, 1883, in Atlanta. He was 71.

Alice Coachman Davis, the first black woman to win an Olympic medal, died on July 14, 2014, in Albany. She was 90.

Bobby Dodd (left), inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player (University of Tennessee) and a coach (Georgia Tech), died June 21, 1988, in Atlanta. He was 79.

Duane Allman, guitarist in the Allman Brothers Band, was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971, in Macon. He was 24 years old.
