Alleged gang members indicted in death of Atlanta councilwoman’s nephew

A Fulton County Grand Jury indicted three alleged gang members Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of the nephew of an Atlanta City Council member.

Darius Bottoms, 18, died because he was mistakenly targeted as a member of the Bloods gang, District Attorney Paul Howard announced in an email.

“Despite the absence of substantial clues at the onset of the investigation, the detectives did an outstanding job bringing to justice the individuals we believe are responsible for this senseless tragedy involving an innocent young man,” Howard said.

Bottoms, 18, was the nephew of Councilwoman Keisha Lance Bottoms. He died when he was ambushed June 13 as he drove his vehicle on Legacy Drive in southwest Atlanta, Howard said. Two gunmen fired several shots and a bullet struck Bottoms' head. A passenger escaped injury.

The 17-count indictment against 16-year-old Rashad Barber and 19-year-old David Dajunta Wallace includes charges of murder and participation in criminal street gang activity. Indictment for Ryan Bowdery, 20, include charges of hindering the apprehension of a criminal, theft by receiving stolen property, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and obstruction of a law enforcement officer
