A federal judge in Columbus today hears arguments over granting eminent domain to a Texas pipeline builder seeking rights-of-way through 27 Southwest Georgia properties.
Sabal Trail Transmissions wants to cross 157 miles of Georgia property to deliver natural gas to Florida. The line would cross nine Georgia counties and five rivers — although the General Assembly recently prohibited Sabal Trail from digging under the rivers — including the Chattahoochee, Flint and Ochlockonee.
Plantations owned by Ted Turner and former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, whose attorneys will argue against condemnation today, are also targeted.
The $3 billion project — 465 miles through Alabama, Georgia and Florida — was authorized by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in February.
