Brian Kemp, the Republican nominee for governor, launched a new television ad Tuesday aimed at softening his image as a gun-toting, “politically incorrect conservative.”
The plot
The 30-second ad features Kemp’s wife of 24 years, Marty, sitting in the couple’s living room, browsing through family pictures and describing Kemp as a “steady as a rock” family man and politician.
“When Brian decided to run for governor, I told him he was too honest for politics,” she says. “It turns out that’s what people like about him.”
The context
Kemp doesn't appear in the ad, nor do the shotgun, chain saw or pickup truck that were centerpieces in his primary campaign ads against Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.
The new ad, which is airing on cable and television stations statewide, is paid for by his campaign.
It ends with Marty Kemp, a former pre-k teacher, asking voters to support her husband.
“Brian’s a wonderful husband and a great dad,” she says. “Take it from me: If you give him a chance, he’ll make you proud.”
It’s Brian Kemp’s second TV ad since winning his party’s nomination for governor. His first post-primary ad also took a less provocative approach.
