The Georgia House passed and sent to the Senate on Tuesday legislation that would delay for one year a mandate that students start choosing a career path by ninth grade.

House Bill 713, sponsored by Rep. Randy Nix, R-LaGrange, also would require age-appropriate career education at all grade levels.

Last year, lawmakers adopted legislation that would have set up the career pathways program effective for the 2012-2013 school year. But state education officials said they want more time to work with business leaders on developing details of the career opportunities that would be available to students. They also said they did not want staff and students to be overwhelmed by having career pathways rolled out at the same time as the new Common Core standards.

HB 713 would push the start of career pathways to the 2013-2014 school year. The House passed it 162-1.
