Governor Deal appoints former top aide to Georgia Lottery board

Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed his administration’s former chief operating officer to the board that governs the Georgia Lottery.

Bart Gobeil, who left Deal’s office last year to become director of statewide economic development and governmental affairs for the Georgia Ports Authority, was named Thursday to the Georgia Lottery Board.

In 2012, Deal appointed Gobeil’s wife to the State Board of Workers’ Compensation, a full-time judicial post.

The lottery is particularly in Deal’s good graces after announcing this week that it had hit his goal of pumping more than $1 billion in a single year into state education programs. The lottery pays for HOPE scholarships for college students and pre-kindergarten classes. It recorded a more than 8 percent increase in ticket sales last fiscal year, which ended June 30.
