Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division will hold a hearing this Wednesday in Atlanta to hear from the public and the professionals about what to do with coal ash. A second hearing was recently added in Brunswick.

Georgia is wrangling with ways to dispose of toxic coal ash, a byproduct of coal-fired, electricity-generating utilities. A few Georgia landfills already accept the ash. Georgia Power recently announced a speeded-up schedule to close its coal ash ponds.

Hearing schedule:

July 27: 1-3 p.m. at the Tradeport Training Room, 4244 International Parkway, Suite 116, Atlanta, Georgia 30354.

August 4: 6-8 p.m. at the Brunswick Historic City Hall, 1229 Newcastle Street, Brunswick, GA 31520.

Changes proposed by EPD, including more notification when ash is sent to municipal landfills, will be voted upon by Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ boardmembers on October 26.
