Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division will hold a hearing this Wednesday in Atlanta to hear from the public and the professionals about what to do with coal ash. A second hearing was recently added in Brunswick.

Georgia is wrangling with ways to dispose of toxic coal ash, a byproduct of coal-fired, electricity-generating utilities. A few Georgia landfills already accept the ash. Georgia Power recently announced a speeded-up schedule to close its coal ash ponds.

Hearing schedule:

July 27: 1-3 p.m. at the Tradeport Training Room, 4244 International Parkway, Suite 116, Atlanta, Georgia 30354.

August 4: 6-8 p.m. at the Brunswick Historic City Hall, 1229 Newcastle Street, Brunswick, GA 31520.

Citizens may present information or make statements. For more information: 404-362-2696.

Changes proposed by EPD, including more notification when ash is sent to municipal landfills, will be voted upon by Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ boardmembers on October 26.
