Chancellor Hank Huckaby told lawmakers Tuesday that the University System of Georgia will take a harder look at tuition and fee increases.
Student are paying about 9 percent more in tuition and fees this year. More students are on the verge of having to drop out of school because they can’t afford college, Huckaby said.
The State Board of Regents will form a new committee to look at affordability issues, Huckaby said.
When it comes to the fees colleges charge, Huckaby said “we’re going to slow that train down.” He said colleges will have to make strong arguments if they want students to pay more in fees, which cover everything from athletics to parking to technology.
Huckaby spoke before a joint session of committee members reviewing Gov. Nathan Deal’s spending proposal for the 2013 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
In years past the previous chancellor, Erroll Davis, warned of tuition increases.
Huckaby didn’t say students wouldn’t pay more next year, but officials said they will try to keep increases to a minimum.
