Atlanta is no longer in the running for a new military command focused on modernizing the U.S. Army.

The Army notified elected leaders Monday the city had been cut from the list of finalists for the Army Futures Command along with Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Houston and New York. That leaves five cities under consideration: Boston, Raleigh, Austin, Minneapolis and Philadelphia, Col. Patrick Seiber, a spokesman for Army Futures Command Task Force, said in an email.

The command is part of the military’s efforts to restructure how it researches, develops and acquires new equipment. In March, Georgia’s congressional delegation urged the Pentagon to locate it in Atlanta, citing the city’s proximity to technology companies, universities, military bases and the world’s busiest airport.

“The intent,” Seiber said, “remains to announce a final location by the end of the month.”
