To receive federal money aimed at preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, states must include at least four of seven possible sex-related questions on the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Local governments can choose which questions to include on the survey, which also has questions about violence, alcohol use and other behaviors. The survey form for high school students includes the following questions about sex.

  • Have you ever had sexual intercourse?
  • How old were you when you had sexual intercourse for the first time?
  • During your life, with how many people have you had sexual intercourse?
  • During the past three months, with how many people did you have sexual intercourse?
  • Did you drink alcohol or use drugs before you had sexual intercourse the last time?

  • The last time you had sexual intercourse, did you or your partner use a condom?
  • The last time you had sexual intercourse, what one method did you or your partner use to prevent pregnancy?

Note: Multiple-choice answers include “I have never had sexual intercourse”
