Fort Jackson Army base officials have identified the 19-year-old soldier who was found dead during morning wakeup at a field location this week.

Army National Guard Pvt. Conner J. McGurran was found unresponsive at the Columbia, South Carolina, base, emergency services transported the Minnesota native to Providence Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, base officials told Fox 57 in Columbia.

Via Twitter, Fort Jackson Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr. released a statement sending his condolences to McGurran’s family.

“We mourn the loss of a 19-year old Minnesota National Guard Soldier in training. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Family members and team mates of the deceased Soldier. We are providing every comfort and assistance that we can to all involved.”

Fort Jackson is primarily a training base for basic combat training. The base is named after former President Andrew Jackson, who was also an Army general. It is one of the largest Army training facilities in the country, training more than 36,000 soldiers each year, according to armybases.org.

An investigation into the soldier’s cause of death is underway.
