About 3,200 pre-k and Head Start children could be back in school Tuesday, one day after their classes were closed due to the federal shutdown. All of the children attended programs run by Ninth District Opportunity Inc., based in Gainesville. A woman who answered the phone Monday at the non-profit’s headquarters said she could confirm classes for the students would be resuming Tuesday. Cherokee County school officials said they’d received word and had just finished notifying their parents. The shutdown of classes for these students had been blamed on the federal shutdown. The shutdown continues, and it was not immediately clear why the change occurred. The non-profit is one of only a handful of Head Start providers that had federal contracts that expired and could not be renewed due to the federal government shutdown.
