A Snellville police officer who was injured when he was struck by another vehicle while driving to a serious injury crash last week is out of the hospital and recovering, authorities said.
Jermarcus McCoy was released Sept. 10, one day after the crash, but his return to duty remains on hold.
McCoy was driving on Ga. 124 to the scene of a crash when he entered the center lane with his emergency equipment activated due to heavy traffic in the area, Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Franka Young said.
That was when a 64-year-old driver in a Ford Focus failed to yield and struck McCoy’s patrol vehicle, Snellville police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Manley said. A third driver’s vehicle received “minor damages” to the rear when the Ford swiped it, Young said.
The driver of the Ford, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car, Young said. The driver and McCoy were taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital. The third driver asked to be taken to Northside and was released shortly afterward.
McCoy joined the Snellville Police Department in March. He previously served as deputy sheriff in Gwinnett County.
No update was provided Wednesday on the condition of the Ford driver, but police on the day of the wreck said he sustained “some serious but non-life threatening injuries.” Charges are pending against him, GSP spokesman Lt. Mark Riley said.
