The driver of a pickup truck is facing vehicular homicide and multiple other charges after a Wednesday afternoon wreck in Gwinnett County that killed a passenger in the truck.

Gwinnett police Cpl. Ed Ritter said the preliminary investigation into the 12:45 p.m. crash determined that Richard Retana, 24, of Snellville, was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 southbound on Highpoint Road near Fireplace Trail when he “accelerated at a high rate of speed” and crossed into oncoming traffic before losing control and rolling the truck into a utility box and a tree.

Retana sustained minor injuries, but his passenger, 23-year-old Terri Wood of Snellville, died at the scene.

Police arrested Retana and charged him with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, laying a drag, failure to maintain lane, speeding and failure to wear a seat belt.

He was released on a $12,200 bond, according to the Gwinnett jail.
