What initially appeared to be a routine house fire overnight in northwest Atlanta may have been an attempt to conceal a slaying.

Atlanta firefighters found a man with multiple gunshot wounds inside the house in the 500 block of Jones Avenue after responding to a fire there around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Officer John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department said. The victim was removed from the home and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he later died, he said.

Another resident escaped the fire, and a third is still unaccounted for, Channel 2 Action News has reported.

Atlanta police have taken over the homicide investigation, while the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department is working to determine how the blaze started. Foul play is suspected.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
