Services for a Berkmar High School junior who was killed this week while trying to cross a Gwinnett County road have been set for next week.
Dakota Waters, 17, of Lawrenceville, died of his injuries Wednesday at Gwinnett Medical Center after the accident on Lawrenceville Highway.
Police said the teenager was in the center turning lane trying to cross the highway near James Road when he was struck around 7:24 a.m. by a 2007 Land Rover driven by Sharon Mitchell-Golden. The 49-year-old Stone Mountain woman, who was traveling northbound on Lawrenceville Highway, had entered the center lane to make a left turn onto James Road when she struck Dakota, police said.
Mitchell-Golden, who turned herself in Thursday, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, which is a misdemeanor, and a turn lane violation — driving more than 300 feet in the center turn lane. Police said weather conditions might have contributed to the accident, but speed and alcohol are not considered contributing factors.
According to Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, a visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 300 Simonton SW. A private funeral service is planned.
Dakota is survived by his parents, Jarrell Waters of Lawrenceville and Jill LeRoy of Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jeremy Waters.
The family has requested donations be made to the funeral home in lieu of flowers.
