A high school senior was shot and killed during a party Sunday night in south Charlotte, according to police.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 18-year-old Chris Allen outside the house, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said he died at the hospital.

"He was bleeding out. There was nothing I could do,"  Allen's friend told Channel 2's sister station WSOC-TV.

Investigators said it appears there was an unsupervised party going on at the house.

A student who was at the party spoke to Channel 9's Mark Barber.

She said there was supposed to be a bonfire at the home with a small group of friends, but word got out about the get-together and older people whom they didn't know showed up.

The student said people in the group started to leave when a man in his early 20s started bragging that he had a gun and showed it to the group. She said she was out in the street in front of the house when she heard gunshots.

Allen and the suspect got into an argument, which escalated, according to police. They said the suspect shot the victim inside the house. Police said neither the victim nor the suspect live at the house.

Friends of the high school senior said they don't know why anyone would shoot him.

"At first I was heartbroken, like so hurt, but now it's just like how could (he) do that? It's not right, it's not OK," Catie Alford said.

Detectives said they spent the night interviewing witnesses at the scene and at the police station to try to piece together the night's events.

Police have said they have a person of interest in the case but have not released the name.

It was Charlotte's 12th homicide of 2017.
