Local Boy Scouts collected more than 229,000 pounds of food through Scouting for Food last year. And they will be hitting the streets again this weekend in Fulton and other metro counties to restock the shelves of local food banks. Scouts were out in force March 8 distributing 1 million-plus grocery bags to their neighbors in Fulton, Cherokee, Rockdale, Cobb, DeKalb and Douglas counties and encouraging them to fill the bags with non-perishable items. Scouts are returning his Saturday to collect the filled bags. Started as by a St. Louis Eagle Scout in 1987, Scouting for Food has grown to become the largest coordinated service project in all of Scouting. The food collected this year will benefit more than 19 local food pantries, including the Atlanta Community Food Bank and North Fulton Community Charities. Residents who did not receive an official Scouting for Food grocery bag may still participate by delivering their food to any partner food bank.
