Coming off a week in which Atlanta saw near-record-high temperatures on consecutive days, it’s back to reality for the metro area this weekend.
North Georgia will continue to cool off Saturday and Sunday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz’s forecast.
Atlanta enjoyed midweek temperatures in the mid 70s, culminating with a high of 78 degrees on Thursday. But a cold front that moved Friday afternoon caused a noticeable drop in temperatures. A northwesterly wind that blew in late Friday night is expected to reinforce the drop in temperatures for the next two days.

Saturday’s morning lows will drop to 40 in Atlanta and the afternoon high should hit 62 degrees, Nitz said. On Sunday, the high is expected to be about 10 degrees cooler at 53.
“A mostly cloudy sky through the day on Saturday, but also mainly dry. Just a few stray showers around, possibly in the afternoon. It’ll keep the rain chance at about 20% for Saturday afternoon and evening.”
Out on the interstates and major thoroughfares, motorists across metro Atlanta should be leery of lane closures and construction delays this weekend.
Sunday will be the first day of a major lane alignment on Ga. 400 along a mile-long stretch between Hammond Drive and Abernathy Road in Sandy Springs. Crews will begin working on a project next month to build a demo bridge over Abernathy Road, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
DOT crews in Cobb County will continue resurfacing Powder Springs Road from Windy Hill to Sandtown roads, resulting in “rolling” lane closures both northbound and southbound throughout the weekend.
In DeKalb County, a crash in the northbound lanes of the I-285 Outer Loop was causing delays at the Chamblee Tucker Road exit Saturday morning. Only the center lane is open, according to the WSB 24-Hour Traffic Center.
There was just one lane open in each direction of I-85 just south of Ga. 53, causing delays.
Drivers in Fulton County could see daytime lane closures on Ga. 9 from Milton Parkway to Upper Hembree Road in Alpharetta. Crews will be working to widen the road to four lanes, add turn lanes at key intersections and upgrade traffic and pedestrian signals, according to DOT plans.
