If you've been closely following the Sandy Springs City Center project, mark Sept. 20 on your calendar.

City officials will unveil a new district name and logo for the project at 5 p.m. Sept. 20 at the construction site. The massive complex will rise near the intersection of Roswell, Mount Vernon and Johnson Ferry roads, where excavation and other site preparation work has been underway. When fleshed out, the development will boast a new city hall, performing arts center, family theater, a park and mixed-use retail and housing.

Mayor Rusty Paul said the branding is important because "the project is a defining one for the city. We wanted to create a name and brand that connects us with the strong sense of place and pride we have for the entire Sandy Springs community, while at the same time, creating a brand reflective of the shared ownership within this specific area."

Paul is inviting representatives of communities throughout the city to bring a jar of dirt to the ceremony. He said the soil will be combine to symbolically demonstrate the development will be "everyone's community."
