A Sandy Springs police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a crash Thursday afternoon, the department said.

The officer was driving east on Abernathy Road about 6:30 p.m., when another driver turned left in front of his patrol car, Sandy Springs police spokesman Sgt. Sal Ortega said.

“The officer had a green light, had the right of away and was not at fault,” Ortega said in an emailed statement.

The crash caused extensive damage to both vehicles and shut down Abernathy Road in both directions for about an hour.

“Based on the scene, the (other) driver will more than likely get cited for failure to yield while turning left,” Ortega said.
