Four apartment units were destroyed and four others were damaged in a Saturday morning fire in Stone Mountain.

The fire started on a back patio of the Landmark at Mountain View Apartments about 4 a.m., Channel 2 Action News reported.

One resident of the complex, which is on Wood Bend Drive, said she awoke coughing from smoke in the middle of the night.

“When I woke up, I saw that it was foggy,” Joyce Richardson told Channel 2. “I opened the door. As I opened the door, the smoke came in, so I rushed downstairs because I said, ‘I have to get out.’”

The Red Cross is aiding displaced residents.

The apartments do have sprinklers, but residents said they weren’t working properly, Channel 2 reported.
