On Wednesday, the company behind a variety of popular, reusable water bottles reissued its recall of 5.7 million water bottles after complaints from hundreds of parents.
Contigo recalled its Contigo Kids Cleanable water bottles due to its clear silicone spout that can detach, posing a choking hazard to children. The recall was originally issued in August after about 150 complaints were recorded by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall was reannounced after the reports totaled 428, with 26 of those complaints denoting that the spouts had dislodged in children’s mouths. In addition to the nearly 6 million recalled in America, there were also 157,000 bottles recalled in Canada and 28,000 recalled in Mexico.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall, take them away from children, and contact Contigo for a free water bottle," read a statement on the CPSC site. "Consumers who received replacement lids in the previous recall should contact Contigo for the new water bottle."
Where were the bottles sold?
The bottles were sold at Costco, Target, Walmart and other stores and retail websites between April 2018 and Feb. 7, 2020. They were sold in various increments for $9 to $24.
What do the bottles look like?
This recall involves Contigo Kids Cleanable water bottles and replacement lids that were given to consumers as part of the August 2019 recall of this product. The base and cover of the clear silicone spout will always be BLACK. Only black-colored spout base and spout cover models are included in this recall. Contigo is printed on the rim and along the front near the bottom of the bottle. The water bottles come in three sizes (13 ounces, 14 ounces and 20 ounces) and four colors (solid color, graphics, stainless steel and stainless steel solid colors). The water bottles were sold individually as well as in two-packs and three-packs.
