Raymond Allen, a beloved character actor from 1970s shows including “Good Times” and “Sanford and Son,” died at the age of 91 Monday.
His daughter, Ta Ronce Allen, shared the news Monday on Facebook. The veteran actor died from respiratory issues not related to COVID-19 at a long-term care facility in California, according to information obtained by Entertainment Weekly.

Allen made his acting debut more than 70 years ago in the 1946 film “Fight That Ghost,” in which he portrayed the role of Fast Delivery Bill. His big break came much later, with the recurring role of Uncle Woodrow Anderson on “Sanford and Son” in 1974.
The popular series centered around one of the most revered Black comedians of all time, Redd Foxx, who played Fred Sanford, and his son Lamont (Demond Wilson), owners of a home-based junkyard business. Allen played opposite the late LaWanda Page, as her feisty character Aunt Esther’s long-suffering husband.
Allen also made a memorable appearance on the classic Black sitcom “Good Times” as Ned the Wino. Allen’s character was introduced in the 10th episode of Season 1 titled “Springtime in the Ghetto,” which saw the Evans family’s youngest child Michael (Ralph Carter) bring home what appears to be a drunk homeless man he wants to help get his act together.
He would go on to make appearances on such shows as “The Jeffersons,” “What’s Happening!!” and “The Love Boat.”
Several folks paid homage to Allen and his work on some of the shows that still make viewers laugh today.
