After suspending most interstate construction for last week’s sales tax holiday, the Georgia Department of Transportation is planning a full slate of road work this weekend.
But most of the work is weather-permitting, so with a good chance of rain all weekend, some projects could be postponed.
Road work rundown: This weekend's two major projects are on I-20 in Rockdale and Newton counties and on I-285 in Cobb County. The two right lanes of I-20 eastbound will be shut down for a 3-mile stretch between Conyers and Covington, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. Monday. The exit and entrance ramps at Almon Road will also be closed all weekend.
On I-285 in Cobb County, the two right northbound lanes will be closed between South Cobb Drive and Paces Ferry Road during the same hours.
Also on the top-end Perimeter, two northbound lanes and one southbound lane of I-285 will be closed between I-75 and Northside Drive all weekend as crews work on sign structures.
Rain, cooler temps on tap: Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said there's a 60 percent chance of rain Friday and Saturday, diminishing slightly to 50 percent Sunday.
Afternoon highs will be around 90 degrees Friday, but will top out around 87 Saturday and Sunday, Minton said. Overnight lows will be in the low 70s.
Falcons fans get first taste of the new stadium construction: The Falcons open the 2014 football season Friday night with a preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
“Fans should anticipate many changes as a result of the construction on the new stadium,” Georgia Dome spokesman Jason Kirksey said. “The fence line for the new stadium project is only 10 feet, 4 inches from the Dome in some areas.”
Changes since last season include the loss of the orange, purple, brown and silver lots, resulting in about 1,300 fewer parking spots around the Dome, Kirksey said. Also, Georgia Dome Drive, as well as portions of Mitchell Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, are closed, and the ticket office and will call windows have moved to the other side of the Dome, between gates B and C.
Elsewhere around town: The Braves play a weekend series against the Washington Nationals at Turner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Friday, 7:10 p.m. Saturday and 8:05 p.m. Sunday.
