Several football and baseball games highlight this weekend’s events in Atlanta, but the weather could be a factor for outdoor activities as scattered showers moved into the area Friday afternoon — just in time for the rush hour.
Channel 2 Action News Doppler radar showed scattered rain across metro Atlanta, with most showers south of the city as of 5:30 p.m.
Glenn Burns, Channel 2 chief meteorologist, predicted “a slight chance of an isolated evening shower” Friday night, and a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday as “a weak cool front moves in and stalls across North Georgia.”
“The front will move south Saturday night, bringing drier air in to North Georgia on Sunday,” Burns said. “We expect partly cloudy skies Sunday, with increasing clouds by late afternoon and evening. Sunday looks to be rain free right now.”
High temperatures will be in the 80s Saturday and upper 70s to low 80s Sunday, Burns said.
That forecast could make for a damp weekend series between the Braves and Mets at Turner Field, where game times are 7:35 p.m. Friday, 7:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:10 p.m. Sunday.
Other weekend sporting events include the Falcons-Panthers game at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Dome, the Georgia Tech-Middle Tennessee State football game at noon Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium and the Morehouse-Clark Atlanta football game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Panthers Stadium.
In Athens, the Bulldogs take on Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Also on Saturday, the Georgia Dome will be hosting the annual Atlanta Football Classic, with Florida A&M taking on Southern University at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. In conjunction with that game, the Parade of Excellence steps off downtown at 10 a.m.
The parade will march down Peachtree Street from Baker Street, then turn right on Marietta Street and end at Philips Arena. The parade will be telecast on WSB-TV from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Several interstate construction projects are planned for the weekend, weather permitting.
The ongoing repaving project on the top-end Perimeter will have three left lanes of I-285 westbound shut down from Ashford Dunwoody Road to Roswell Road, three right lanes closed on I-285 eastbound from I-75 to Ashford Dunwoody Road and three left lanes in each direction closed between Paces Ferry Road and I-75. Those closures are scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Friday and continue through 5 a.m. Monday.
In south DeKalb County, the right lane of I-20 eastbound will be closed those same hours from I-285 to Wesley Chapel Road.
In Cherokee County, the right lane of I-575 northbound at Sixes Road will be shut down beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. Sunday.
