Racing to the finish
Saturday marks a month until Election Day. President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, coming off the first of three debates, remain in a tight race that shows signs of getting even tighter.
ON THE TRAIL
A resurgent Romney, buoyed by a winning debate performance, spoke of a “close-fought battle” to come with Obama as he campaigned in Virginia and prepared to travel today to St. Petersburg, Fla. Obama, whose campaign said he is “eager” to tangle with Romney again in an Oct. 16 debate at New York’s Hofstra University, headed for Wisconsin and then to Cleveland, where he will hold a rally today.
IN THE POLLS
Though Obama maintains a slight lead in most polls, the most recent ones, taken just before the debate, showed a tightening in both the national race and in the battleground states.
IN THE ECONOMY
The No. 1 issue in the presidential race, jobs and the economy, sent a mixed signal Thursday, with the number of Americans seeking first-time unemployment benefits rising to 367,000 from 363,000 the previous week, but not as much as forecast. That gave the stock market a boost. A more telling indicator is due today: the monthly national unemployment report for September, which forecasters believe will continue to be mired above 8 percent. It will be the next-to-last monthly reading before the election.
