As the search continues for six gunmen involved in a shootout Wednesday in northwest Atlanta, officers are patrolling bus stops near local schools, police said.

Soon after gunshots were heard at Rolling Bends Apartments, officers started searching about 1 p.m. for multiple shooters in the 2500 block of Center Street.

Local schools in the Atlanta Public Schools system were locked down as a precaution.

SWAT officials wrapped up a door to door search for the gunmen about 5 p.m. Though no arrests had been made, students were allowed to board buses and head home.

“We intend to have a heavy presence in these areas,” Atlanta police Sgt. Warren Pickard said. “We understand that parents are concerned, and we are working in tandem with APS to ensure to ensure the safety of all students.”

The lockdowns, however, have been lifted.

Nearby schools were placed on lockdown while police searched for suspects.

“All schools impacted by the incident yesterday will follow a normal operating schedule today and we will make adjustments as needed,” Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said Thursday in a statement.
