Two drivers involved in a predawn wreck Friday involving an Atlanta police cruiser were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Atlanta police Friday evening said Jeffrey Lapham, 29, and 23-year-old Taj Knight were each facing a DUI charge following the three-vehicle wreck. Both were taken to the City of Atlanta Detention Center.

Earlier Friday, police spokesman Ralph Woolfolk told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that an officer was traveling southbound on Peachtree Road at Peachtree Battle Avenue about 3:15 a.m. when a Toyota Corolla pulled out into Peachtree Road and struck a GMC Sierra pickup truck, just in front of the officer.

“The GMC … in turn sideswiped the officer’s patrol vehicle,” Woolfolk said in an email.

“The driver of the GMC continued south for about a quarter of a mile, parked the truck and was walking away when officers apprehended him.”

No serious injuries were reported. Woolfolk added that the officer was checked out at the scene, but did not need to be taken to the hospital.
