A man accused of posing as a stranded motorist before robbing the do-gooder who helped him was arrested Wednesday on the side of I-75.
Clayton County deputies saw the man, identified as 42-year-old Nicolae Gunici, speaking with another driver on the entrance ramp from Old Dixie Highway, according to the sheriff’s office. They recognized him from a lookout posted days earlier by the Henry County Police Department and took him into custody.
According to Henry police, the man flagged down a victim Monday afternoon on the Jonesboro Road ramp to I-75 South.
“The suspect was standing outside a red minivan-type vehicle, with the hood up,” police said in a lookout posted to Facebook. “The suspect pretended to be needing assistance with his vehicle, and after approaching the victim, he displayed a handgun and robbed the victim of his valuables.”
The department released a photo of a man wearing a suit and tie and asked for the public’s help to identify him.
Gunici was wearing a three-piece suit when he was arrested Wednesday.
“When the armed robber suspect identified as Nicolae Gunici noticed a deputy pulling up, he waved the car away and began walking towards the deputy,” the sheriff’s office said. “COBRA and Black Hawk deputies recognized the suspect instantly and quickly placed him into custody.”
He was taken to the Henry County Jail, where he is being held without bond on a charge of armed robbery.
