After smoking marijuana, a north Fulton County man left his 3-year-old son alone for 40 minutes while he went to get something to eat, Roswell police said.

Police were called Monday morning to apartments on Preakness Drive, near Holcomb Bridge Road, where a neighbor was standing with the boy, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The boy was alone outside and was crying when the neighbor found him, according to police.

While police were speaking with the neighbor, the boy’s father, Charles Clay, returned home, the report states. An officer followed Clay to his apartment to question him, police said.

“I entered the apartment and smelled a strong odor of freshly burnt marijuana,” the report states. “While standing in the den, speaking with Clay, observed a glass pipe on a desk in the room. The pipe had suspected marijuana residue on it.”

Clay, 41, told police he had smoked marijuana, gotten high and left the boy alone while he went to Subway, the report states. He was arrested and charged with reckless conduct and marijuana possession, according to police. Clay was booked into the Fulton County jail and released Wednesday after posting $5,500 bond, booking records showed.
