Wanna buy a town? Toomsboro, Ga., for sale

A developer in south Georgia is looking for someone to buy the small town of Toomsboro, April 2012.

Looking for an investment? Well, it's right here in your backyard, Atlantans, give or take a hundred miles south. The town of Toomsboro, Georgia, is for sale. Developer David Bumgardner, who owns many of the properties in town, is putting them on the market.

Toomsboro, a small community with about 700 residents, has one convenience store, a florist, a custom cabinet shop and a post office. It also has the Swampland Opera. The AJC visited the town in 2002, when it was originally on the market, and in 2004, right after it was first sold.

2004: Betty Rose and Bud Criswell look over all the records left in the vacant Wilkinson County Bank behind the Swampland Opera in downtown Toomsboro. Musicians used to tune up their instruments in the vacant bank when the Criswells ran the opera.

This isn't Toomsboro's first real estate rodeo. Bumgardner bought some of the properties from preservationist Bill Lucado and snagged others at auction about a decade ago with the intention of turning Toomsboro into a quaint tourist town.

2004: Toomsboro mayor Roger Smith stands at the fence of the newly restored bed and breakfast at the center of his mid-Georgia town.

2004: Foreman Freddy Clemons carries keys to ten buildings and eight homes in Toomsboro -- literally holding the keys to the city.

2004: Clemons opens the blinds in an old barber shop downtown. One of the current Toomsboro owners, Bill Lucado, thinks the town would be a perfect fit for a movie production company seeking a set or a music company looking for a great venue.

So if you're looking to film, to invest or just to give new meaning to the old phrase "my hometown," Toomsboro can be yours. Just head on over to the cashier's office if the price is right.
