OCTOBER 17, 2015 ATLANTA Runners start their race in the pre-dawn darkness. Mayor Kasim Reed and United Way President Milton Little joined more than 2,000 runners at the Mayor’s Inaugural 5K on the 5th Runway at the world’s busiest airport Saturday, October 17, 2015. Airport officials shut down the 5th runway (Runway 10/28) until 8:15 am so runners and walkers could exit the course. All proceeds from the event will benefit United Way of Greater Atlanta. Major sponsors of The Mayor’s Inaugural 5K on the 5th Runway include Delta Air Lines, The Coca-Cola Company, Enterprise Rental Car, Georgia International Convention Center, MARTA, and Publix. Over $123,000 was raised, said airport spokesman Reese McCranie. The race's overall winner was Andrew Murfee, 15, a Woodward Academy student. KENT D. JOHNSON/KDJOHNSON@AJC.COM
