Georgia's not-so-proud moments

Georgia has much to be proud of, and a few things that just make us shake our heads in embarrassment. Here are a few that easily come to mind.

A couple of Georgia boys claimed that they'd brought home a 7-foot-7, 500-pound man-monkey corpse from the North Georgia Mountains. Their claim is now being called a hoax.

Barbie Bandits: What's a not-so-poor couple of strippers to do when they need shopping money? Rob a bank of course. Ashley Miller and Heather Lyn Johnston were both caught on tape robbing the bank branch inside a grocery store. They were convicted along with accomplice Benny Herman Allen III, a teller at the Bank of America in Acworth.

I-285 Perez: Former Atlanta Braves pitcher Pascual Perez earned his nickname by getting lost before a start for the home team in 1982. Apparently, he circled the city several times on I-285 looking for Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. We can only assume the Braves gave a map of the city to their new hire.

UGA basketball test: Former hoops coach Jim Harrick Jr. gave members of his squad a test with questions such as "How many points is a 3-point basket worth?"

Jimmy Carter attacked by swamp rabbit: A media frenzy erupted when the president of the United States, while fishing near his Plains home in 1979, apparently had to fend off the attack of a swimming rodent with a boat paddle.

Micheal Vick imprisoned for dogfighting: How can someone with so much talent (and money) do something so misguided? Only the former No. 7 knows.

Michael Shane Lasseter: We hate to pick on UGA fans, but when they run backwards up and escalator at the Atlanta airport and make the flying public miss hundreds of flights ... we sorta have to.

New Coke: Why mess with a good thing? Why mess with the Real Thing? How can a world-class company have marketing go so horribly awry? Former Coke CEO Roberto Goizueta seems to be swallowing a bitter pill in this photo marking the doomed product's 1985 release.

Izzy: Time has perhaps whithered Atlanta's hatred for the less-than lovable mascot of the 1996 Olympic Games. Or has it?

Sherley Brown, a former Cobb County police colonel, is seen with the shaved monkey that was part of a alien hoax in 1953. Brown and his partner were first on the scene, and for a day, the world believed that an alien was discovered in the Atlanta area.

Runaway bride: The nation got another dose of Georgia's finest when Jennifer Wilbanks fled just before her wedding to John Mason. Her disappearance from Duluth sparked a nationwide search and intensive media coverage. While missing, she called Mason from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and falsely claimed that she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a Hispanic male and a white woman.
