More than 9,900 properties were scheduled to be auctioned on the courthouse steps today in a 13-county area of metro Atlanta, according to Alpharetta-based Equity Depot. We attended Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett sales.

The monthly ritual of bringing delinquent tax lien sales and foreclosure auctions to the steps of the courthouse demonstrates the latest numbers that nearly 10 percent of Georgia mortgages were past due in the second quarter, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. That's one of the highest delinquency rates in the country.

Potential bidders gather at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center looking at foreclosed properties that are up for auction.

Foreclosure filings were up 32 percent in July over the same month last year, according to RealtyTrac Inc. More than 360,000 households, or one in every 355 homes, received a foreclosure-related notice, such as a notice of default or trustee's sale. That's the highest monthly level since the foreclosure-listing firm began publishing the data more than four years ago.
